It has been thought garlic possesses magical properties and is widely used in charms and spells.  Most believed the magical properties of garlic are related to speed, strength, endurance, protection and to ward off evil. Many cultures associate garlic with the Underworld. Egyptians associated garlic with the divine and used it in oath-taking ceremonies. Garlic can be placed in doorways and around the house for protection and to keep evil at bay - especially in new homes.  Garlic is also used in magickal healing and exorcism.
